What is bleed?

Bleed refers to an additional area of your artwork beyond the cut line (the outer edge of your artwork). It is important to provide 3mm of bleed around the edge of your artwork to ensure that no white paper is left showing at the edges of your finished product.

It is also important to keep all text and borders at least 5mm inside the cut line – this 5mm area is known as the no text area.

How to add a bleed to your design

Firstly, when creating your document, ensure that you have 3mm bleed selected for top, bottom, left and right:

Then follow one of the links below to view a guide on how to set up in your design software:

What type of file formats to you accept?

Adobe Acrobat PDF format files are our preferred choice. PDF’s must be press optimised (print ready) with bleed, crop marks and fonts embedded. When creating PDF files please note that books or booklets over four pages must not be supplied as spreads always create a PDF containing individual pages, not spreads.

Other file types we accept are: EPS, JPEG (300dpi only) & TIFF (300dpi only). Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files must be converted or printed to PDF format before sending.

If your artwork has graphics/info that is to be printed up to the edge of the page, you must add 3mm bleed. We also recommend that any text is kept at least 5mm away from the edge of the page.

Will the colours on my print be the same as my computer screen?

Probably not! This is because the image you see on your screen is made up of red, green and blue colours and your screen is, in effect a big light bulb. As paper cannot be illuminated in the same way, the ink colours do not have the benefit of enhancement by light, thus making them less bright (commonly referred to as subtractive colour). We do however calibrate our printers to ensure the best colour range possible. If in doubt we recommend you order a proof, to ensure you are happy with the printed outcome.

My file is very large, too big to email. How can I send it?

Our online file uploader can handle files up to 200mb in size, which covers most print jobs we handle. If however, your file is larger than 200mb that is no problem too! We typically use WeTransfer or Dropbox for large file sizes. If you are still stuck, please get in touch with us and one of the team will assist you.
